IP core network, overlay network and communication service (5) : A step towards future network that provides virtual networks

Abstract(in English) Until now, we have reported "service-over-core network" as a communication network framework that enables the provision of virtual networks for building communication services, and priority control, core network function, how to implement virtual ISP networks, how to revise the NGN structure so that it can provide IP circuit interface, and so on. We have evaluated three technologies for building virtual networks, i.e., capsulation method, NAT and ID/locator split-based routing mechanism, and report that the capsulation method is the only useful candidate. In order to minimize the growth of routing table size in the Internet, we show that the capsulation method is greatly superior to the ID/locator mechanism. Applying the service-over-core network, we present an attractive vision of future communication networks as five working models. Model 1 is basic and can include the Internet, Model 2 provides core network functions and supports telephony, model 3 provides priority control, model 4 provides exclusive resource management using wavelength, model 5 provides IPv4 and a new address system. We highlight the possibility that the Internet will be reconstructed as a virtual network and/or a VPN, both of which adopt capsulation technology.
