A distributed method for controlling coverage area using local topology information for wireless networks

Abstract(in English) In wireless mesh networks and some wireless sensor networks, each node has its own coverage area for providing the services. In order to cover the entire field while reducing the overlaps of coverage area, it is important to determine the coverage area size by using the location information of neighboring nodes. However, such information cannot always be obtained. In this report, we introduce the method to determine the coverage area size by utilizing the distance information estimated from received signal strengths only. Specifically, in the proposed method, each node estimates the relative locations of its neighbors based on the estimated distance information. It then sets its coverage area size based on the shape of this area, which is computed by utilizing the location information. Through simulation experiments, we confirm that our method can maintain more than 99% coverage of the total area, regardless of the node density, and can reduce the energy consumption by more than 50% when compared to that of an existing method.
