Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Silicon photonics is attractive owing to the advantages such as compactness, cost effectiveness and so on. However an optical coupling between silicon optical circuit and external element, including an optical fiber and a photodetector, is a serious problem because of a large optical field mismatch. To overcome this problem, the grating coupler to transfer optical power from a silicon wire waveguide to a surface mounted photodetector with a polarization-insensitive operation has been demonstrated. The fabricated grating coupler suppresses the coupling efficiency difference between TE and TM mode lightwave to less than 0.68 dB at a wavelength of 1550 nm.
