Abstract(in English) We have proposed active multi-mode interferometer (active MMI) bi-stable laser diode (BLD) using lateral mode bi-stability for future highly integrated optical random access memory (RAM) application. For further size reduction, we have made a fundamental analysis to exploit 2 dimensional photonic crystal waveguide for the active MMI BLD. As the photonic crystal waveguide is no more index guided waveguide, the theoretical equation of multi-mode interference (MMI) is not utilized simply to it. So far, quasi-guided index model for the photonic crystal have been proposed instead, therefore, we have exploited this model for the MMI analysis on 2 dimensional photonic crystal waveguide even for the self-imaging of 1^ order propagation mode input. As the results, we have confirmed the followings; (1) 1^ order mode, as well as fundamental mode, behave just according to the model on the liner condition in the dispersion relation of the photonic crystal, (2) Based on the model, compact size of less than 1/25 is possible compared to the previously reported active-MMI BLD.
