Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper describes the taxonomy of Japanese evaluative expressions, constructed based on Appraisal theory. This taxonomy reveals the similarities and differences among the evaluative expressions, which were not captured systematically in previous studies. The employment of the taxonomy enables the extraction of the information on not only polarity but also other various linguistic features that are crucial for the understanding of "evaluation" as a social behaviour. In addition, the paper introduces Appraisal Dictionary of Japanese (attitude), which provides the classification of about 10,000 evaluative expressions according to the taxonomy.
