Backscattering Matrix determined by Reciprocity in p-OTDR and its Experimental Verification

Abstract(in English) Recently the challenge to realizing perfect performances of optical components becomes trendy due to the speed and financial limitation of digital compensation. This trend required further improvement of measurement accuracy. Polarimetric OTDR with high-power optical pulse source and 4 Channel polarization mode filters employing PLC is demonstrated to find local PMD distribution fitted well by the modified Lorenztian velocity distribution that is invariant of the fiber under measurement using right and left circular polarization of transmitted optical pulse. The back scattering matrix is analyzed to confirm van de Hulst matrix symmetry having 10 parameters, but to find only 5 independent parameters sufficient to describe it. Fiber C with 10fs/rkm PMD is successfully measured to draw PMD distribution along fiber but their accuracy remains to be cross-checked. As summary, since there are strong correlations in local PMDs as a measure of fiber uniformity, we should apply the statistics based on the squared Lorentzian distribution for them.
