Abstract(in English) The continuing growth of the Internet and its associated services demands higher capacity optical network technology. For provision of the increasing capacity of the network, an area of emerging internet is the development of high-density 40Gb/s optical interfaces. So the reduction of the power and the size of the 40G transceiver are urgent need to be overcome. We developed a compact optical transceiver by using low-power CMOS MUX/DEMUX ICs and a novel flexible printed circuit (FPC) connection technique. We succeeded in achieving the size of transceiver same as a 10-G X2 MSA transceiver (91.5×41.8×13.22mm), and total power consumption less than 5.6W at room temperature. We evaluated the optical characteristics, and we achieved the clear 40G optical eye opening and high input sensitivity -9.8dBm. These characteristics are applicable for 40G VSR and 40GbE serial applications.
