1000-km WDM Transmission of 40G-symbol/s DPSK and DQPSK signals

Abstract(in English) We perform experiments of 1000-km wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) transmission of 40G-symbol/s RZ-DPSK and RZ-DQPSK signals. In our transmission experiments, cross-talk from neighboring WDM channels is maximized since pre-filtering in a transmitter is not used. We measure systematically bit-error rates (BERs) of the received RZ-DPSK and RZ-DQPSK signals, which are dependent on WDM channel spacing and transmission distance. The signal quality degradation due to amplified spontaneous emission noise and fiber nonlinearity is discussed based on numerical analyses and experiments. In 1000-km transmission systems, the error-free operation is achieved for RZ-DPSK when the WDM channel spacing is 84 GHz, whereas the BER less than 10^<-3> is attained for RZ-DQPSK with the channel spacing of 100 GHz.
