Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Isthmo-optic (IO) neurons located in the isthmus of the avian brain project to the contralateral retina, and increase the local gain of retinal out put. IO target cells that receive projections of the IO neurons extend their axons in the inner plexiform layer (IPL) to form terminals in the outermost sublayer of the IPL. The axon terminals of the IO target cells (IOTCs) do not contact with the retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), and, therefore, retinal intrinsic cells must relay the possible indirect projection from the IOTCs to the RGCs. In the present study, we labeled one of the relay cell candidate, bipolar cells (BCs), by means of Diolistics, and also separately labeled axon terminals of the IOTCs by mean of immunohistochemistry for parvalbumin. The results revealed that one subtype of the multistrarified BCs have horizontal processes in the recipient zone of the IOTC's projection, suggesting that those cells could contact with the IOTCs.
