Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In scientific databases, we often apply function-based approximation to large observation data and simulation data for removing noise and reducing the amount of data. Traditionally, such an application is performed as an independent process from the underlying database system, but tight integration between function-based approximation and a database system would improve query efficiency and data availability. Based on this background, Thiagarajan and Madden developed a system called FunctionDB, which enables direct querying to approximated functions. Its basis is that they incorporate grid-based sampling of approximated function values into a query process of a database system. When a query is given, FunctionDB performs dynamic sampling of function values, but the overhead is not small. Therefore, we propose a kind of indexing scheme for accelerating query processing for approximated functions. The indexing scheme is based on STING, which is a well-known method for representing aggregated statistical information for spatial databases. In this paper, we describe the underlying concept and the index construction method, and show the query processing strategy that uses the indexing method.
