Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Changes in the terminal frequency (TF; the end frequency of downward FM sweep) of echolocation pulses were investigated by using Telemike for two FM bat species (Pipistrellus abramus and Miniopterus fuliginosus) in a cluttered environment. P abramus emitted pulses in pairs (strobe group) with 20-40 ms interpulse intervals (IPIs), which occasionally created pulse-echo ambiguity. When overlap occurred, variation of the ΔF was significantly increased to 5-6 kHz (F-test, P < 0.001). On the other hand, M fuliginosus never emitted pulses in a strobe group. Since IPIs were always adjusted to be longer than ESD, echo streams were not overlapped. These comparative results indicate that by shifting TF within successive pulses, P abramus separate between their own echo streams to avoid pulse-echo ambiguity. Our findings also suggest that echolocation strategy in the cluttered environment may be different between bat species.
