Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Passive acoustic sensing of people walking (walkers) has been investigated as the first step of a basic study of sensing or recognizing various objects based on their acoustic information. Footstep localization (position estimation) and tracking were examined experimentally in an indoor environment by using a simple microphone array consisting of four microphones set at 2.5 m above the floor. The success rate and the spatial error of localization for footsteps were analyzed. The results showed that localization and tracking of footsteps were achieved with sufficient accuracy within a diameter of 7-8 m on the floor. Optimization of the data-processing time range for one footstep for proper localization, and a simple methodology for identifying spatially close footsteps of multiple people enabled footstep localization and tracking of more than four people. The stride length, speed, and direction of each walker can be evaluated by estimating the footstep positions and times.
