Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In this study, the psychophysiological responses to infant crying in 20 dyads of fathers and mothers were investigated with reference to the degrees of discomfort to infant crying. The heart rates (HR) and skin conductance changes (SCC) of the participants were measured while they were exposed to unfamiliar infant's cries. The results showed that there was no statistical difference between fathers and mothers in HR as well as in SCC; both fathers and mothers exhibited transient HR decelerations followed by gradual returns to the baseline levels; they similarly showed sustained increases in SCC. A close inspection into the results, however, indicated that recoveries of HR of fathers were somewhat faster than those of mothers and increased levels of SCC in fathers were slightly higher than those of mothers, suggesting that fathers felt infant crying as more stressful than mothers. As for the differences in degrees of discomfort to infant crying, fathers of low discomfort in 'personal situations' showed no transient HR decelerations, indicating that they were little affected by infant crying as far as HR was concerned.
