Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Electronic books are becoming popular nowadays, and we are expected to read books on such electronic displays more and more in future. In this research, human mental stress is assessed using electroencephalogram(EEG) while people read sentences on paper and on electronic display respectively. That is to say, EEG is measured while subjects read sentences written in small letters and large letters on paper and electronic display, and the amounts of α-wave and β-wave are analyzed. As a result, it became clear that β-wave is dominant when people read sentences written in small letters. Especially when they read on the electronic display, the ratio of the amount of β-wave to that of α-wave is higher in the case of small letters than large letters with significance. It is said that this ratio indicates the degree of mental stress, thus we can say that the difference between the degrees of stress caused by small letters and large letters is not so large in reading on papers, but large in reading on electronic display.
