Sign Language Recognition from Video Using Particle Filter and Hidden Markov Model

Abstract(in English) In this paper, we will introduce a sign language recognition method from video data. First, the positions of arms are detected using Particle Filter. Second, sign sentences are recognized using Hidden Markov Model. In the previous study using motion tracking sensors attached to both hands, the recognition rate was 91.7%. In our method using video data only, the recognition rate 90.0% was accomplished without any sensors. For the practical applications, motion tracking sensors are expensive and cause uncomfortable feeling, but our method needs only one video camera and is considered more useful.
