Development of Liver Vessel Registration Method for Comparative Reading of Liver CT Images

Abstract(in English) In this paper, a method for image registration for comparative reading of liver CT images is presented. One of important subjects in computer aided diagnosis (CAD) is to support comparative reading of medical images. Because there can be a positional gap between two images taken at different time, it is needed to register them before comparative reading. Especially, in many cases of comparative reading of liver CT images, time variation on the position or shape of each tumor is evaluated by using positional relationship to vessel regions in the liver. Therefore for such cases, registration should be done based on the shape of liver vessel regions. From this point of view, we developed a method for registration of liver vessel regions in two CT images taken from the same patient at different time. The method consists of following 5 steps; (1) vessel region segmentation, (2) branch point extraction, (3) feature point selection, (4) search of corresponding points, and (5) registration by non-rigid deformation. In experiments with 15 sets of practical abdominal CT images, it was shown that registration results by the proposed method were promising for all of sets.
