Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is known to fluctuate temporally and randomly, and its detailed evaluation is considered to be useful in designing optical/electrical compensation methods. This paper reports the rapid measurement for the Mueller matrix and the PMD of optical fibers based on linear optical sampling technique, which we have previously demonstrated as an ultrafast optical signal monitor. This approach employs the polarization-multiplexed pulses as probe lights and measures the x-y polarization components of the lights output from the measured fiber using linear optical sampling. The frequency-dependent behavior of the PMD vectors is calculated by the Mueller matrix method following Fourier analysis of the polarization complex amplitudes. The measurement time is determined by the sampling frequency and the acquired sample points to construct the temporal waveforms, resulting in accomplishing the rapid PMD measurement.
