Implementation and evaluation of program development middleware for Cell Broadband Engine clusters

Abstract(in English) Although accelarators have become prevalent in recent years, it is still difficult to implement many applications on them because special programming techniques and trainings are often required. To write effective parallel program on PC cluster environment with multi-core processors requires two types of programming techniques: multi-thread programming to use multiple cores, and inter-node programming using communication libraries such as mpich or OpenMPI. In order to reduce such programming cost, in this report, we propose a program development middleware which targets Cell Broadband Engine (Cell/B.E.) cluster. Using this mechanism, developers can use Cell/B.E.'s computational resources effectively without inter-node programming nor thread control. As a result of evaluations compared with OpenMPI implementation using two types of benchmark programs, the middleware could reduce 40% of these program steps, and achieved 90% of OpenMPI execution performance in maximum.
