Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) ISPs need to measure end-to-end network performance in large scale for the purpose of monitoring customers' performance and provisioning network devices efficiently. Although a variety of infrastructures for active measurement have been extensively developed for research, because most of them aim to clarify some research issues based on a different network model, their application to a commercial ISP's network operation in their present form remains difficult. Especially, a key consideration is cost of distributing measurement servers and maintaining the infrastructure. Therefore, in this paper, an IP performance measurement infrastructure that utilizes user's PCs as beacons is proposed. Probing packets are sent and received among the beacons under the control of a central server. The central server calculates a set of measurement paths which maximizes network coverage under some constraints of user's PCs. The infrastructure is experimentally implemented and evaluated through simulations and real-world experiments and its considerable potential for practical network operations is demonstrated.
