Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) It is difficult to distinguish between the electrogastrograms (EGGs) of elderly healthy individuals and elderly gastrectomized patients on the basis of spectral analysis. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of applying a complex dynamical analysis method to the EGGs of young healthy, elderly healthy, and elderly gastrectomized male individuals. We analyzed the EGGs by using the maximum Lyapunov exponent (MLE), which is one of the indices of the chaotic characteristics of the time series. For most of the temporal intervals, there were significant differences between MLEs estimated from the EGGs of the young and elderly individuals. EGGs of the elderly gastrectomized subjects might be identified among the EGGs of elderly individuals based on the distribution of the MLE.
