Abstract(in English) The present research was conducted as a part of a series of attempt to explicate the understanding process of academic concepts and to utilize the findings for instructional improvement in higher education. This project would also contribute to the clarification of the mechanisms of higher mental functions. In the present paper, the role of discussion in understanding the hierarchical nature of abstract concepts was analyzed. The discussions performed in a small class in university were subject to analysis. Analysis of discussion process indicated that the criteria to evaluate the ideas proposed through discussion were needed in addition to the basic discussion skills.
