Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | The fields of reliability (or dependability) and safety are deepening ties even stronger. This implies that both disciplines would stand close and therefore have common parts. Here, points in common and differentiae between reliability and safety engineering are discussed for better understanding and further advancement of the integrated or boundary area of those disciplines. At first the concept of function is a key word for throwing a bridge between the disciplines. The function is defined as generating the needed acting-state(s) while required, and ceasing those while not required. The acting state is the state of an item in which the item is giving and receiving action(s) and/or reaction(s) to other item(s). The action is categorized into activated and un-activated actions: the former is generated when the state between the items is in order, while the latter is generated when the state is in disorder. The un-activated action results from that the activated action is not generated because the state between those items is in disorder. The main differentia between the disciplines comes from the fact that the reliability performance is determined only by the performance of an item to achieve a function(s) although the safety performance is affected not only by the performance to achieve a function(s) but also by demands on the function(s) and an action(s) unrelated to the function(s). |
