Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The feel of Braille and Braille readability vary according to the type of Braille output used. In this study, we have developed a model for measuring the 3D cross-sectional shape and size of Braille characters. We measured the sizes of Braille characters printed by three Braille output devices. These devices were made in three countries, namely, Japan, the United States, and Germany. We have also developed a tangible and 3D enlarged Braille model for understanding the relationship between a Braille output device and the 3D cross-sectional shape of the Braille characters outputted by it. This model was displayed at Braille-Big-Event to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Louis Braille-the inventor of the Braille coding system. Over 200 visitors at this event could easily identify the difference in the 3D cross-sectional shape of Braille characters outputted by different Braille output devices.
