Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We investigate the impact of TCP traffic on a large-scale NAT (LSN), which has been attracting attention as a means of leveraging a limited number of global IPv4 addresses. Through traffic measurement data analysis, we found the followings: More than 1% of hosts generated more than 100 flows at the same time. The number of active flows depended on the measurement points. At one measurement point, there was on average 1.43 - 1.83 active flows per host, while at the other point, there was on average 3.10 - 3.98 active flows. When the inactive timer used to clear the flow state from a flow table is changed from 15 s to 10 min, the number of active flows becomes more than 10 times larger. We also investigate how to reduce the above impact on an LSN in terms of saving memory space and accommodating more users for each global IPv4 address. To save memory space, we found that we can reduce the number of active flows on an LSN by a maximum of 48% by regulating network anomalies. To accommodate more users for each global IPv4 address, when mapping a source IP address from a private to a global IPv4 address, leveraging destination IP address information can effectively reduce the required number of global IPv4 addresses by 86% on average.
