| Abstract(in English) | The rural and remote areas require a special telecommunication technology especially because of their unique environment of their isolation, their small size, small population, topography and limited local capital for productive investment. Although various methods have been proposed for telecommunications for such underserved rural areas, more effort is needed to bring Internet and cellular access. KDDI has been contributing telecommunication technologies for such areas at ITU-D SG2, which employ a compact access point called a femtocell along with backhaul lines including a Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT). Ministry of Transportation & Communications, Republic of Marshall Islands (RMI) and KDDI are collaboratively researching the availability and sustainability of the proposed telecommunication infrastructure using VSAT in rural and remote areas (islands) of RMI through the pilot project. In this paper, we consider challenges for bringing telecommunication infrastructure in rural and remote areas and explain the overview of the said pilot project. |
