Abstract(in English) The existence of carotid artery calcification as an index for arteriosclerosis attracts a great deal of attention. Thus the system for detecting the carotid artery calcification from dental panoramic radiographs has been developed to prompt the patients to check. This paper proposes a new automatic detection method for carotid artery calcification in dental panoramic radiographs based on intensity gradients. This paper focuses on the fact that the intensities of the carotid artery calcification in the radiograph are higher than that in neighborhood. The proposed method can reduce the number of parameters adjusted in advance and the automatic detection method from the entire image can be developed. Experimental results show that good detection performance is obtained.
