Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) APAN (Asia-Pacific Advanced Network) consists of National Research and Education Networks (NRENs). This paper describes the requirements for NRENs, learned from the history in the Unites States. It is also described that APAN-JP network operators have contributed the developments of advanced networks. It should be noted that the independent purchase of the international circuits by NREN members has built inefficient networks, compared with TEIN (Trans-Eurasia Information Network) based on EC's ODA fund. Finally, fiber optics technologies have enabled the expansion of NREN, but further dramatic developments can't be expected, whereas the demand of the bandwidth will be continuously increased. More budget for expanding international circuits should be pursued to meet the demand of the users.
