Abstract(in English) | This paper discusses deployment strategies and operation technologies for Long Term Evolution (LTE)/LTE-Advanced Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) consisting of small and low-power base stations (BSs) deployed within macro cell area to increase system capacity. Since low transmission power enables to reduce BS price, energy consumption and BS size; small and low-power BS can provide a flexible and cost effective solution to increase system capacity compared to macro BS. Since its cell range is generally small, the recommended deployment strategies are deployment of small and low-power BS in high traffic area, and careful selection of its transmission power to meet desired coverage. To obtain further gain from small and low-power BS even though the cell range is small, two key technologies are presented, including Cell Range Expansion (CRE) and enhanced Inter-Cell Interference Coordination (eICIC). CRE allows users to connect a BS even though the received power from the BS is not highest, and it will increase the system capacity gain by enhanced offloading from macro BS to small and low-power BS. Another key technology is eICIC, which facilitates the proper operation of CRE in a severe interference environment and is being considered in LTE Release 10 standardization work. We present the guideline of CRE and eICIC in LTE and LTE-Advanced HetNets, and show their performance gains. |
