Quality Evaluation Method for Metallic Topcoats with Imaging Technology

Abstract(in English) We propose an efficient method for evaluating quality of metallic topcoats by using a still camera which could acquire XYZ tri-stimulus values. Test images were made by changing chroma, hue, luminance and luminance of flake pigments in images taken by the camera. The tolerance of the parameters was obtained on the test images by the subjective evaluation. As results, we obtained linear relations between standard deviation (SD) of luminance and the each parameter. Within the limitation of the parameters obtained, color differences (CD) are calculated for all combinations of the parameters and the maximum CD is decided. Under a condition of the maximum CD, tolerance of correlation coefficients for edge and inside distributions of chromaticity is obtained. Accordingly, metallic topcoat is evaluated with these parameters obtained.
