Investigation of electromagnetic spectra of THz-waves radiated from current-biased intrinsic Josephson junctions

Abstract(in English) In order to investigate the influence of thermal fluctuations on spectra of terahertz waves radiated from Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_<8+x> intrinsic Josephson Junctions under a bias current flow, we performed a numerical simulation using the coupled sine-Gordon equations taking account of a thermal noise current. For a constant bias at the maximum radiation power that was obtained in the fundamental cavity mode with the in-phase oscillation in junction stacks, the thermal noise broadened radiation peaks in the electric field spectrum, which can be fitted by Lorentzian function. Moreover, higher harmonics of the main peak vanished due to the increase in noise levels under the thermal fluctuations. For a 2-junction stack, the linewidth of radiation power Δf/f varied from 0.09% to 0.21% with increasing the noise current, and the same order of the linewidth was obtained for a 10-junction stack by modifying an autocorrelation function of the noise current. These results are useful for linewidth experiments for a terahertz oscillator using the intrinsic Josephson junctions.
