Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The concept of Privacy has enlarged with changes in technology and society. After the 1960s, when modern information technology, such as computer networks and database management started to develop rapidly, informational privacy began to evoke social concerns and academic dispute. Several scholars has proposed privacy theories that examine the extent to which someone can control others' access to and one's own presentation of self-identity. This type of theory has important merits: it explains why invasion of privacy will threaten the value of autonomy and why we should be concerned about a new kind of privacy problem--privacy in public, like data mining mass fragmental data on a large number of people. However, the same information may or may not be private, depending on the context and situation; so, we cannot neglect the situation and context when we form a privacy theory.
