Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The aims of this study are to investigate whether the length of an NP without a relative clause (RC) and the constraint of prosodic phrases affect word order. The previous experimental study (Yamashita and Chang 2001) demonstrated the "long before short" preference in Japanese scrambling, using NPs with RCs. In order to reduce the syntactic heaviness caused by the RCs, we used the NPs with simple modifiers as the experimental items in the sentence recall task. At the same time, the constraint of prosodic phrases was tested if it alternates word order. The results showed the length effect of NPs without RCs and the opposite tendency to the one hypothesized by the constraint of prosodic phrases.
