Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) It is said that causative events can be represented differently by verbs in Japanese and Chinese. In this study, we report two novel experiments on adult Chinese learners of Japanese (CL) that test whether the L2 verb learning is guided by case particles in a novel verb learning task that employed causative events that included an Action part and a Result part. We found that (i) both advanced and intermediate L2 learners can use case particles as effectively as Japanese native speakers (NS) when determining the meaning of novel verbs and that (ii) without such cues, both CL and NS mapped the novel verb to the event sub-component differently. This indicates that L2 learners are influenced by their existing L1 representations without such overt cues in L2 verb learning.
