Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Synchronization plays an essential role in cooperative performance of music such an orchestra or chorus. Tones of the musical instruments or pitches of the singing voices should be entrained in such a way that they create a nice harmony, where harmonic sounds should satisfy rational frequency relationship (e.g., 3:2 for perfect fifth). If sounds of the music players are not synchronized, the cooperative performance sould not be very impressive. On the other hand, if perfect synchronization is achieved, such performance may sound as machinery (computer-generated music), and should be less artistic. The aim of the present study is to clarify such synchronization structure inherent in singing voices in chorus. As an index of synchronization, differences in frequency and timing are considered. By psychological experiment using synthesized sounds, we detect maximal frequency difference as well as maximal timing difference that degrade the chorus quality. Then we investigate the pitch relationship between two singers who sing in choir. We recorded EGG (Electroglottography) signals of the subject. The subjects are classified into two groups: 1) group of singers who are regular members of a chorus group, 2) group of untrained singers who have few experience on chorus. We compared the experienced singers with inexperience's singers to see the difference. As the result, we confirmed that frequency difference observed in experienced singers is smaller than the inexperienced. This provides a hint for understanding the relationship between synchronization and artistic level of music.
