Field Analysis for 3-D Optical Waveguide with Thin-film Multilayer Structure based on Equivalent Network

Abstract(in English) Rigorous analysis of step discontinuities for 3 -D optical waveguides is needed for the exact design of optical integrated circuits. In this paper, so far developed equivalent networks in lateral direction and that along wave propagation with a step discontinuity based on mode theory is applied to the rigorous field analysis of the step discontinuity of thin-film multilayered 3-D optical waveguides, which are known as "Polarization Maintaining Waveguide". Eigen propagation modes for the waveguide with different widths at both sides of the step discontinuity are calculated up to over the 13 0th mode, giving the equivalent multi-transmission line network along wave propagation and equivalent ideal transformer bank for the step. Then the reflected and transmitted higher modes including the dominant mode are calculated for a dominant mode incidence, whose validity is confirmed by power conservation and continuity of the tangential electromagnetic field at step. Also, radiated power at the step is estimated, dynamic behavior of the field is calculated and demonstrated, these calculations are used to give reasonable analytical results with success.
