Recent Advances in Polymer Optical Waveguide Technologies

Abstract(in English) Polymer optical waveguides are attractive as optical components in optical interconnects and optical communication systems because of the potential of easy low-temperature and low-cost fabrication. In this review optical printed-circuit boards (PCBs) are discussed with optical transmitter-receiver components, chip-to-chip, and board-to-board optical interconnects through optical backpalne boards. Advances in polymer waveguide technologies developed at various companies and organizations are reported such as loss minimized by halogenation, low birefringence without stress, high thermal stability, refractive-index controllability, and good adhesion with silicon substrate. As a future technology, the photo-bleaching technologies with polysilane waveguides on tunable filters and tunable optical sources are discussed.
