Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Assistive technologies have enabled people with motor disabilities to live more independently. They can operate a wide variety of equipments using a single switch called "control-interface switch". Such switches, however, have a defect of being affected significantly by involuntary body movements, resulting in erroneous operations of the equipments. To overcome such problems, we have been attempting to develop a new control-interface switch, GSN/1, using 3-axis geomagnetic sensor. This switch has several advantages such as 1) an easy positioning of the detector relative to a required body part, 2) high sensitivity to voluntary body movements and 3) low sensitivity to involuntary ones. In this paper we evaluated two different features of GSN/1, 1) its ability of distinguishing voluntary body movements from involuntary ones and 2) its usability in the control of the Operate-Navi ^[○!R], a scan-based on-screen keyboard. Experiments employing 5 healthy volunteers and a person with motor disabilities revealed that GSN/1 could be insensitive to involuntary body movements similar to voluntary ones and possess a high usability in the control of the Operate-Navi ^[○!R].
