Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Registration of medical images is an important problem. However, automatic image-based registration is computationally expensive. In this paper, we propose an efficient rigid registration method based on mutual information using graphics processing unit (GPU). Mutual information-based registration methods require the joint histogram. However, a joint-histogram has a lot of bins, and the calculation of this joint histogram is not suitable for GPU whose shared memory is limited. The proposed method calculates the joint-histogram by calculating multiple one-dimensional histograms and synthesizing them by using the fact that one image is not transformed during the registration. Therefore, the proposed method can be efficiently executed on GPU with limited shared memory. Experimental results show that the proposed method is about 140 times faster than a standard implementation on a CPU.
