Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We first introduce the words which ought to contribute to communication called onomatopoeia, and the phenomenon underlying its characteristic, phonetic symbolism. Onomatopoeia and phonetic symbolism are practical in various situations. To reveal the mechanism of phonetic symbolism, we focused on the similarity between phonetic symbolism and cross-modal correspondence and conducted some experiments. Finally, we emphasize the importance of uncovering the mechanism of phonetic symbolism to demonstrate the usefulness of onomatopoeia in more extended situations.
