Estimation of Psychological Stress Levels Using Facial Expression Spatial Charts

Abstract(in English) This paper presents a new framework to describe individual facial expression spaces focusing on dynamic diversity of facial expressions under the consideration of facial expressions that appeared as discharge of emotion to create a unique space in each person. Our method consists of three steps: the first step is to extract topological features from time-series facial image datasets using Self-Organizing Maps (SOMs); the second step is to integrate weights of SOM into categories using Fuzzy Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) networks; and the third step is to create facial expression spatial charts integrated by all arousal levels produced from categories of facial expressions in each basic facial expression. We analyzed relations between the number of individual facial expression patterns and psychological stress values. The results show facial expressions effected by stress differ in each subject. Moreover, we estimated stress levels of four grades using Support Vector Machines (SVMs). The mean estimation rates for all ten subjects and five subjects whose datasets are more than ten weeks are 68.6 and 77.4 percent, respectively.
