Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We propose body-schema-based neural network models for mental transformations of object and scene representations. For the mental transformations of an object, a parietal-premotor network is exploited to perform mental rotation using stored object representations in the inferotemporal cortex. For mental transformations of a scene, a hippocampal network is recruited to perform viewer rotation to update an egocentric representation of multiple objects in a scene encoded by theta phase precession. We present neuroimaging and behavioral studies that provide support for the proposed models. Our fMRI study on mental rotation reveals significant activations within the premotor cortex and the inferior parietal lobe. In addition, activity in the right parieto-occipital region is consistently related to the amount of mental rotation. Our behavioral experiment further shows that the environmental vertical axis is preferentially used for imagined object rotations. This result suggests that body-environment interactions in a gravitational world are incorporated into the process of mental rotation. Finally, by using simultaneous fMRI and EEG, we show that theta oscillation dynamically binds the frontal eye field and the medial temporal lobe into a coherent whole during object-place memory retention.
