Speed-up of SAR Image Processing using Graphics Processing Units

Abstract(in English) We sped up image formation processing for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) using a graphics processing unit (GPU), which is remarkable as a processor that can be speed-up at a low price. We adopted "Sub- aperture" method that was the image formation processing algorithm that suppressed the amount of the memory. To the problem of the data transfer between CPU and GPU requiring the processing time, we designed the method of executing the data transfer and the GPU operation processing at the same time. As a result, speed-up is 13 times to a general-purpose CPU 1 processor, 2.8 times to 8 processors. To make it to the execution time equal with GPU using a general-purpose cluster server, the size is 7 times, power consumption is 5 times, and the price is 3.8 times.
