Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Micromanipulation of biological tissues at single-cell level is of great interest in the bio-medical engineering field. Recently, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has been collecting attention as a bio-compatible material in making tools for the manipulation and their usability was tested in vitro experiments. In this study, we made attempts to fabricate micro-scale needles with CNT bundles that have various diameters and lengths. By a simple electrophoretic deposition method, we could produce the CNT bundle assemblages of 0.01 to 6 mm in length, tapering to 0.1-10 microns in diameter at the tip end. Those needles could penetrate through the cell membrane of isolated neurons in physiological saline, so that we lifted and moved horizontally their cell body over several tens of microns. Since electrical impedance of the needles was in a measurable range in physiological saline, they might be usable not only as a micromanipulation tool but also for single cell electrophysiology.
