Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) There have been the concerns that the Japanese broadband Power Line Communications (PLC) may cause harmful interference to a variety of radio services. It is thought that the interference would be maximal for the radio astronomy observations where extremely weak signals are observed by very sensitive receiving systems. We carried out measurements of the leaked emissions caused by PLC modems by using HF radio astronomy antennas that are actually used. The measurements were conducted at the litate observatory of the Tohoku university, and it was found that the leaked emissions from the house were detected even at the distance of about 130m, and that the intensities are stronger than the threshold levels of interference harmful to the radio astronomy observations by more than a factor of about 50,000. This result would indicate that the radio astronomy observations in the HF band could be strongly disturbed by the PLC modems.
