Adaptive Cross-Layer Controls for Quality-of-Service Supports on Wireless LANs

Abstract(in English) Provisioning a per-flow quality-of-service (QoS) control in wireless LANs is still an important issue even today. In this paper, we propose a method to guarantee the quality of particular applications in the wireless LANs. This method applies the cross-layer control functions among the MAC layer, the IP layer, and the TCP layer, so that the wireless station, excluding access point, needs not to load the QoS control functions in the MAC layer. Features of our method are as follows: (1) in the IP layer to separate the priority/non-priority buffer and apply the priority queue algorithm, (2) in the MAC layer, to add the per-flow QoS-control function, called MAC-frame receiving opportunity control (ROC), to the access point, which urges the access point to fail intentionally to return ACKs for some of the data frames to suppress the throughputs of non-priority flows, and (3)in the TCP layer, to use the window control. In this paper, we show that the proposed method can guarantee the quality of particular applications as well as the JEEE802.11e.
