Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The growth of Internet traffic has increased energy consumption by network equipment such as routers and switches. Consequently, energy consumption is becoming a key environmental, social, political and cost issue. Focusing on energy consumption by Internet service provider networks, the energy bottleneck is routers. This urges us to reduce energy consumption of routers. In this paper, we propose a new OSPF compatible ECO-friendly distributed routing protocol (ECO-RP). In our proposal, each router dynamically changes its configuration in response to overall network traffic amount. For example, when an overall traffic amount is low, each router changes its configuration so that traffic could be routed only by a subset of routers, and unnecessary routers could shutdown. We implement ECO-RP entities to assess feasibility. Furthermore, some simulation studies, which assume a real ISP network of 69 routers, and coexistence of ECO-RP and OSPF entities to take a migration scenario of the proposed protocol into account, are conducted. The results show that the proposed protocol is able to reduce energy consumption by about 7.4% at maximu, even when only a part of the routers speak the proposed protocol.
