Extraction and Visualization of Hole Regions in Multi-dimensional Images Using Region-based Contour Trees

Abstract(in English) Recently, multi-dimensional images such as three-dimensional (3D) X-ray CTs and MRIs are frequently used, especially in medical field. The relationship among isosurfaces in these images has important role to understand the objects described in the images. One of the problems for analysis of the structure of isosurfaces is that the structure largely varies by small "hole regions" connecting background regions. In this report, we propose a method to extract the hole regions from multi-dimensional, binary images, and that to visualize the result in two-dimensional (2D) space. In the extraction method, firstly a subtraction image is extracted between an initial image and the processed image by closing procedure. Then, the structure of isosurfaces of the processed image is described by Region-based Contour Tree (RBCT). Finally, each of the connected regions in the subtraction image is evaluated whether it corresponds a hole region, based on the described structure of processed image by RBCT. Visualization of the result is carried out using 2D Contour Structure Map, displaying the structure of isosurfaces in the initial image with the extracted hole regions.
