Non-destructive evaluation of multilayer conductor using an HTS SQUID gradiometer

Abstract(in English) We examined the ability of detecting defects in multilayer aluminum plates, as the first step toward application of SQUID NDE to defect detection in a power cable being developed with YBCO superconductor, by using a planar-type HTS SQUID gradiometer with 1mm baseline. In the present study, we could detect a magnetic signal induced by a defect 20mm underneath the surface of the multilayer aluminum plates and the ability of detecting defects located 30mm underneath the surface was indicated. We also found that the observed frequency and depth dependences of the gradiometer peak signal were well fitted by theoretical curves taking account of decay of eddy cuffent and defect-induced magnetic field depending on the distance between the defect and the gradiometer.
