Measurement of Effective Material Constants of Artificial Dielectrics

Abstract(in English) The measurement of the material constant of the artificial dielectric made of spherical conductors is carried out for the first time by the waveguide method being compared with the simulated walue. The present study compares the effective permittivity and permeability for different arrangement of spherical conductors in the simple cubic lattice, body-centered cubic lattice, face-centered cubic lattice, and random configuration. As a result, it has been found that both the effective permittivity and permeability agree well with the simulation result. Material constants are found to have little difference between the crystal structures and the random placement, and thus filling factor is most important for artificial dielectrics made of spherical conductors. Microwave absorbers could be easily designed by the artificial dielectric based on this result.
