High-power, large-dynamic-range output level control with heater-mounted SOA

Abstract(in English) A semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is very promising as a compact amplifier used in photonic networks. However, in the conventional SOA gain control with drive current, a saturation output power largely decreases during gain control. Therefore, the usable output power in auto output level control operation is limited to a very low level. In this study, we foucused on a thermal gain control which can maintain a high saturation output power during gain control. We fabricated a heater-mounted SOA module whick integrates a tiny heater on the chip. the heater-mounted SOA module exhibited a large saturation output power of >+13.4dBm over the gain control range of 10 dB. It laragely improved a usable power range in output level control operaton of 10Gbps NRZ-OOK signal, and a large input power dynamic range of>17dB was obtained for a high power auto level control operation up to +0.8dBm.
